We were so pleased to hear discussions happening at @bauma.official this year about sustainable construction. But naturally it left us wondering, what about sustainable construction of events? 🤔 

Here are our 2 cents...

🚗 Travel 
Transport is a huge contributor to the event industry's significant carbon footprint. Across the build, event days and break, hundreds or thousands of journeys are made to attend or work at these locations, making incentivising eco-friendly transport so important. 

We regularly get positive feedback about how much we use (where possible) members of the team who live closer to events, or have genuine local knowledge which enhances our delivery and also reduces our carbon footprint for staff travel. 

We also love when events choose to run reward schemes or discounts for attendees or employees who travel by public transport, and should ensure a viable public transport option is available. 

🔋 Digitialisation 
With so many exciting tech innovations in the event sector, the opportunity to minimise printing and waste is huge. 

Electric signage, event apps to replace physical maps or leaflets, and digital badging solutions could all be part of a plan to improve the sustainability of an event. 

🚮 Plastic Reduction 
We've all left an event or tradeshow with a tote bag bursting with freebie plastic swag we never end up using. 

In the interest of minimising unnecessary plastic usage, exhibitors can get creative with their stand display and offerings to attendees - discounts, digital giveaways or smaller eco friendly gifts.

They're great ways to draw in engaged attendees without offering them yet another branded biro...

Finding interesting venues can be easier said than done, but here are some key things to think about when you're on the hunt! 💒 

Establish what you need from the venue - get specific! This client needed a location for product photoshoot, so we were looking for good lighting, open space and plenty of plain wall for backdrops. 

Scout around - explore different location options, this is where you can get creative! Keep an open mind and try to envision how your client could make each potential venue work for them.

Go and see them! Getting into the space in-person is essential. Always make the time for a visit.

We asked Jack for his best travel advice when working events.

 So he decided to film his thoughts while on the windy open down of a ferry as he was travelling back from an event.

Sadly, travel for events is often not so glamorous. It’s 4am alarms, unhealthy snacks, and trying to do some emails with the terrible wifi.

Jack’s trick? Travel smart, and it’s often different for every show.

✈️ Big international event? Always arrive early. Delays are stressful. Running late to build is the worst.

 🚆 European exhibitions? Know your public transport options. Some venues are great for trains, others not so much.

 🛏️ Late night builds or derigs? Yes, it's great to consider accommodation within walking distance, but you should also consider if you can rent a house with more comfortable living areas. It all depends on which vehicles you have with you, and how many staff/days you're there for. 

 🎒 And always bring: Painkillers, backup chargers, a change of clothes, and healthy snacks you actually like.

Jack's back with another selection of top (still random) tips for budding exhibitors. These are a great sounding board to compare your current exhibiting plan against:

📦 Product

Don't fall into the trap of trying to bring as much of your product range as possible - it's overwhelming for attendees and a hassle for you. Instead, pick the products that best showcase the quality of the manufacturing and value of your wider range.

🤝 People

Having the right people on your stand is essential for making a lasting impression on visitors - and the best professionals in the industry aren't always the best as operating a front of house role. Make sure the people representing you are able to engage with the public and serve as a great advert for your team.

🚀 Space

At a minimum, 30% of your stand should be space. When you overcrowd your area, you lose the ability to invite visitors into your space, and instead force them into the uncomfortably crowded walkways. By preserving space at your stand, you can easily draw attendees in and engage in conversation, without spilling into the walkway.
